Safety Counts serves as the campus security report for the UC Berkeley Campus. In 1998, the federal government passed the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, formerly the Student Right to Know Act of 1990. This law requires colleges and universities receiving federal funding to disclose the reported instances of criminal activity on their campuses. Safety Counts, however, is much more than a collection of crime statistics. UCPD strives to make this the definitive resource for safety and crime prevention information.
In addition to our thoroughly updated text, the 2007-2008 edition newly features
- an updated crime reporting areas map, with UCPD's "The Box" represented for the first time
- guidelines for how to proceed in the event of a campus wide shooter incident
- information about the People Locator and our campus wide Alert and Warning System
- a panoramic photo by Cris Benton taken from a kite flying over the campus.
