Campus Safety Programs & Services

Walk with BearWALK (Night Safety Escort) Service

Uniformed, radio-equipped and trained student employees of UCPD, Community Service Officers (CSOs) provide a walking escort in conjunction with the Night Safety Shuttle to nearby residences, public transportation or parking facilities during the evening hours. The service is available to all and is proven to make a difference in your safety. Program boundaries are:

Cedar (N),
Prospect/Highland Place (E)
Parker (S), and
Shattuck (W.)

Service hours are dusk to 2 AM, usually beginning at 7:30 PM during daylight savings time, 6 PM at other times of year. Limited service is also available during the winter and summer break.

To request an escort, call 642-WALK (9255) 15 minutes before you need the escort (more advance reservations not accepted.) When calling, please be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your location at the time of the call
  • A phone number where you can be reached
  • Your destination

15 Minute Notice: Please call 15 minutes before you wish to be picked up. Last call taken at 1:45am

Get Around with Bear Transit Night Safety Shuttle or UCPD's Owl Service

The Night Safety Shuttle service is an extension of Bear Transit daytime shuttle service (operated by Parking & Transportation), and provides safe nighttime transit to and from the campus for classes, study, research and meetings. Routes run from points on campus to BART, Clark Kerr campus and residence halls. There are four lines which operate until approximately 3 AM.

Complementing the Bear Transit shuttles into the early morning, Owl Service offers pick up and drop off van rides provided by UCPD's CSOs between 2 AM and 6 AM.

All four lines run at 30 to 60 minute intervals. Call 510-642-WALK for an estimated arrival time for the next shuttle due at a stop near you. Or refer to the Parking and Transportation website, and search BearTransit.

"O line" aka Owl Service is provided by UCPD's CSOs
from 2am to 6 am

Now with service starting at 2am, the Owl Shuttle will pick up from campus locations or designated Night Safety Shuttle Stops within these boundaries:

Parker (S), and
Shattuck (W.)

OWL LINE POLICIES:

  • 5 Minute Wait Limit: Because we want to provide timely service to everyone, we ask that Owl Van riders be accurate when telling dispatch when they want their pick up. Drivers cannot wait longer than Five Minutes for riders without disrupting the service of others. Please be on time!
  • 15 Minute Notice: Please call 15 minutes before desired pick up. Last call accepted at 5:45 am. Give us time to get to you!
  • 1 Carry-On: Please limit your carry-ons to one piece the size of a typical backpack.

East: Hillside/Prospect (including all campus housing facilities.)

Other Info

If you are unable to use any of our Night Safety Services, please refer to the Night Safety Map for our recommended well-lighted, well-travelled walking routes on the campus. We encourage you to plan your route for safety and walk with friends or a group whenever possible. Program the UCPD dispatch number (510-642-5333) into your cell phone and give it a quick key for a direct line to our emergency response team if you are in trouble, or see someone else in trouble.

Cal-B-SAFE Information Line

The Cal-B-SAFE Information Line offers the caller several options to listen to recorded information about safety programs 24 hours a day. To reach the information line, call 64B-SAFE (2-7233). Campus Safety Information

Download ST&AR and install this small program on your PC and you will be informed of each new Crime Alert by a pop-up Star from your Start Toolbar. Self Defense Courses

CalFIT program at Recreational Sports Facility can arrange self-defense classes for your campus group upon request.
