Evening classes, study, research or work may keep you on campus late at night. UC Berkeley offers these Night Safety Services to get you safely where you need to go after dark. All services are free to the community.
- an automated dispatch system
- either for walking escort (until 4 a.m.)
- or for early morning "door-to-door" shuttles (beginning after 4 a.m.)
- or live GPS tracking for Night Safety shuttles

1. After Dark Until 4 AM -- Walking Escort
After dark, and until 4 AM, you can walk with a CSO, or Community Service Officer -- a uniformed student employee who is trained in non-confrontational safety techniques, and carries a police radio.

2. After Dark Through Until 4 AM --Night Safety Shuttles on Routes
Before 4 AM., shuttles follow set routes. For this summer's pilot program, there will be 2 Southside shuttles and 1 Northside shuttle until 2:45 AM, at which point there will be 1 Southside and 1 Northside shuttle until 4 AM.

3. After 4 AM Until 5:30 AM --Night Safety "Door-to-Door" Shuttles
After 4 a.m., the South Side line converts to a "by request" Door-to-Door service from campus locations to points within EXTENDED BOUNDARIES. Last request taken at 5:30 AM via phone or online.

How to make a BearWALK Night Safety request
- Begin no earlier than 15 minutes before desired pick-up.
- Go to BearWALK.berkeley.edu
- Click the button for your type of service based on time of your request.
- Log in with your CalNet ID
- Provide vital information
- Your location (be specific, building or address)
- Your callback number
- Your destination
- Beginning at 7:30 p.m., shuttles enable GPS devices and the online map shows their positions along their routes.
How to track Night Safety Shuttles
After 7:30 PM service begins, and you can track the location of the Night Safety Shuttles.
- Click on the stop icons to see the next scheduled arrival times.
- Watch the bus icons and estimate when the bus will arrive at your stop in real time.
There is a delay of a few seconds to the refresh rate on the map, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to the stop.
We get anyone in the community there safely!
CalNet ID is not required to see the map at bearwalk.berkeley.edu/shuttles
You can also call 510/642-9255 to make to a request without CalNet ID.
