BearWALK Service
Walk with a CSO 365 nights per year

Uniformed, radio-equipped and trained student employees of UCPD, Community Service Officers (CSOs) provide a walking escort in conjunction with the Night Safety Shuttle to nearby residences, public transportation or parking facilities during the evening hours. The service is available to all and is proven to make a difference in your safety. Program boundaries are:

Cedar (N),
Prospect/Highland Place (E)
Parker (S), and
Shattuck (W.)

Service hours are dusk to 2 AM, usually beginning at 7:30 PM during daylight savings time, 6 PM at other times of year. Limited service is also available during the winter and summer break.

To request an escort, call 642-WALK (9255) 15 minutes before you need the escort (more advance reservations not accepted.) When calling, please be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your location at the time of the call
  • A phone number where you can be reached
  • Your destination

 

Owl Service
pick up and drop off Van Ride

Now with service starting at 2am, the Owl Shuttle will pick up from campus locations or designated Night Safety Shuttle Stops within these boundaries:

Cedar (N),
Prospect/Highland Place (E)
Parker (S), and
Shattuck (W.)

for OWL SERVICE are

  • North: Hopkins/Yolo/Eunice
  • South: Ashby
  • West: Sacramento
  • East: Hillside/Prospect (including all campus housing facilities.)

 

 

Get Around from Stop to Stop with Bear Transit Night Safety Shuttle

The Night Safety Shuttle service is an extension of Bear Transit daytime shuttle service (operated by Parking & Transportation), and provides safe nighttime transit to and from the campus for classes, study, research and meetings. Routes run from points on campus to BART, Clark Kerr campus and residence halls. There are four lines which operate until approximately 3 AM. After 2 aM Try UCPD's Owl Service.

All four lines run at 30 to 60 minute intervals. Call 510-642-WALK for an estimated arrival time for the next shuttle due at a stop near you. Or refer to the Parking and Transportation website, and search BearTransit.

  • About Waiting for the Appointment: Always wait in a safe place for your OWL Shuttle or the CSO.

OWL LINE POLICIES:

  • 5 Minute Wait Limit: Because we want to provide timely service to everyone, we ask that Owl Van riders be accurate when telling dispatch when they want their pick up. Drivers cannot wait longer than Five Minutes for riders without disrupting the service of others. Please be on time!

  • 15 Minute Notice: Please call 15 minutes before desired pick up. Last call accepted at 5:45 am. Give us time to get to you!

  • About Waiting for the Appointment: Always wait in a safe place for your OWL Shuttle.

  • 1 Carry-On: Please limit your carry-ons to one piece the size of a typical backpack.

Night Safety Map

If you are unable to use any of our Night Safety Services, please refer to the Night Safety Map for our recommended well-lighted, well-travelled walking routes on the campus. We encourage you to plan your route for safety and walk with friends or a group whenever possible.

Self Defense Courses

FOR WOMEN

Self-defense training  for women  Women can get self-defense  training on campus through  the CalRAD program, a  partnership between Gender  Equity Resource Center, Office of Student Development,  and UCPD. CalRAD's Basic  Physical Defense training  follows the Rape Aggression  Defense Systems model, a  realistic approach that begins  with tactics such as awareness,  risk reduction and risk  avoidance, then progresses  to the basics of hands-on  self-defense techniques. RAD  aims to make self-defense a  viable consideration for the  woman who is attacked.  How long does it take? Nine  to twelve hours, split into  four sessions. The fourth  session (the simulation), is  optional, but is recommended.  How much does it cost? A  nominal fee gets you a student  manual, which lets you return  to any RAD program site for  refresher practice for free.  How do I sign up? To sign  up, go to geneq.berkeley.  edu, and follow the link in  "Workshops and Classes."  Login using your CalNet ID  to confi rm your attendence.  What do I bring? Please wear  loose, comfortable clothes to  move in, and a bring a pen for  taking lecture notes. FOR OTHERS

CalFIT program at Recreational Sports Facility can arrange self-defense classes for your campus group upon request. Workshops will focus on crime awareness and physical defense tactics to build confidence. For more information on course content and costs for workshops, contact CalFIT at 510-643-5151.

Report Crime

Why Report? If you are a victim of a crime, or if you become aware of a potential threat on campus, you should inform UCPD immediately. Prompt reporting is an integral part of crime prevention and will help the police to address the issue quickly, and reduce the risk of further harm. Additionally, when you make your report, you assist UCPD in maintaining accurate records of the incidence of crime on campus, which lets us work better to keep the campus safe.

If you are in trouble, or see someone else in trouble, contact UCPD's 24-hour dispatch team in one of three ways

  • Dial 9-11 from ANY landline phone on campus property.
  • Program the UCPD dispatch number (510-642-5333) into your cell phone (give it a quick dial key!)
  • Use a Blue Light Phone

Cal-B-SAFE Information Mailbox

The Cal-B-SAFE Information Line offers the caller several options to listen to recorded information about safety programs 24 hours a day. To reach the information line, call 64B-SAFE (2-7233).
