UCPD crime report #12-04448 & 12-04581

Sproul Plaza and Golden Bear Cafe - ATM
September 19, 1012

Update:  An arrest has been made in connection with these robberies.  Kody Alan Smith has been taken into custody and has been charged with multiple counts of robbery.

On Monday, September 10th, 2012 two robberies occurred at the Golden Bear ATM.  The first victim was walking on lower Sproul Plaza at around 2:55 p.m. when she was approached by a male who identified himself as “Kody” and asked her if she would like to purchase a magazine subscription.  The victim agreed to buy the subscription, however, when informed of the price she declined.  The suspect and two accomplices threatened the victim.  The suspect walked the victim to a nearby ATM in the Golden Bear Café.  The victim withdrew cash which was taken by the suspect.  The suspect and his companions were last seen walking towards the Sather Gate.  The victim was not injured during the encounter.

The second robbery occurred at about 4:50 p.m.  The victim, a 21 year old female student, was walking through Sproul Plaza near the intersection of Bancroft Way and Telegraph Avenue when she was approached by a male.  The male introduced himself as “Kody” and told the victim that he was selling magazine subscriptions.  The male suspect attempted to verbally pressure the victim into buying several subscriptions. The victim declined but due to hand gestures made by the suspect, she feared that she would be physically harmed if she tried to walk away without giving the suspect money.  The suspect walked the victim to an ATM in the Golden Bear Café where the victim withdrew cash which she gave to the suspect.  While standing in line the victim noticed the suspect talking to a male and female who seemed to be acquaintances.  The suspect was last seen leaving the café.

The following individual has been identified as the robbery suspect:

SMITH, Kody Alan, a White male , 24 years of age,  5’11” in height, 135 lbs., with a thin build, blue eyes and short hair.  There is no description of the suspect’s two companions at this time.
