Suspicious Circumstance

Public Advisory

November 23, 2010

On Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 2:00 a.m. two female students were waiting for the UCPD BearWALK van to pick them up at Rochdale Co-op.  A white van (with no insignia) pulled up and asked them if they needed a ride.  One of the females asked the driver, an unknown race male with dark hair and brown eyes, if he was BearWALK.  The driver said yes and the two females got into the van.  After driving a short distance the driver admitted that it was not a UCPD BearWALK van, however, he drove the females to their residence.

While UCPD cannot determine if this suspicious circumstance is connected with any attempt of wrong doing we want to make the public aware that all University safety programs are carried out by trained uniformed personnel and vehicles used for these programs are marked with either UCPD or Parking & Transportation emblems.  If you have any information about this incident or any similar incidents please contact UCPD at (510) 642-6760.

As a reminder to our community, UCPD provides you the following information regarding our night safety programs:

UC Berkeley has various Night Safety Services to get you safely where you need to go after dark.  All services are offered free, and are available to the entire campus community and are provided by uniformed campus employees.  Marked campus vehicles are used for the shuttle services.

  • BearWALK Service – Is operated by UCPD.  Community Service Officers (CSOs) are student employees who provide escort services after dark around campus.  The CSOs wear insignia clearly identifying them, carry police radios and are trained in safety techniques.

  • Owl Service – The CSO program also offers van transportation around campus during the early morning hours until 6 a.m.  The van is clearly marked as a police vehicle and is driven by uniformed CSOs. (Do not enter a vehicle that is not clearly marked as a Bear Walk Van and when in doubt do not hesitate to ask for I.D. or call UCPD at 642-3333)

  • Night Safety Shuttles – Parking and Transportation runs a Night Safety Shuttle service which is an extension of their daytime Bear Transit service.  The shuttles provide primary service to the Libraries, the Southside, Residence Halls and the downtown BART station.   The shuttles are clearly marked as Parking & Transportation and driven by uniformed drivers who have radios monitored by UCPD.

More information on the campus Night Safety programs can be found at our web site at:
