Why Does the Amount of Time Between Incident Date and Date Posted Vary?

It is not always prudent for the police department to publicize details of a case which may be under investigation. Other factors, such as our coordination with Berkeley Police Department, may need to be taken into consideration before posting some alerts. However, the typical delay between incident and posting dates is usually accounted for simply by business hours and the time it takes to confirm the facts to be posted.

What's the Difference Between a Crime Alert, a Crime Advisory, and a Community Advisory?

UCPD Berkeley wants to make as much information as possible available to the campus community. Though we regularly report crimes as required by the Jeanne Clery Act, not all postings we make are only to satisfy the Federal requirement. Here are the definitions of our different postings.

Crime Alert, Clery-Reportable — (Unless otherwise designated, all Crime Alerts are Clery reportable). Crimes occuring on campus property (including housing), on public property that is directly adjacent to and accessible from the campus, and on some noncampus property which meets criteria for inclusion (University Village, Albany, for example), are required by the Clery Act to be reported.

Crime Alert, Non-Clery — (Designated as "NC" in the alert number and page title). Reported crimes in our near vicinity (UCPD calls this area, "The Box") that are not specifically required by the Clery Act. See below for link to map of "The Box" and reporting areas.

Crime Advisory — (Designated as "NC-ADV" in the alert number and page title). Reported crimes taking place outside "The Box" that either involved or might be of concern to members of the campus community

Community Advisory — (Designated as "NC-ADV" in the alert number and page title). Incidents (which may or not involve crimes) but that UCPD considers may pose a potential threat, or otherwise warrant the attention of our community.
