Stolen Vehicles

Various Locations

July 18, 2006

In the past two weeks, there have been 3 stolen vehicles reported on University property.  The locations of these auto thefts are as follows:  two at the Upper Hearst Parking Structure and one at the Lower Hearst Parking Structure.

UCPD recommends taking the following steps in protecting your property and to discourage would-be criminals from committing auto thefts:

  • Park in well-lit, heavily populated areas.
  • Always roll up all windows and lock all doors beforeleaving your vehicle. Approximately 50% of all vehicles stolen were left unlocked.
  • Never hide a second set of keys in your car. Extra keys can easily be found if a car thief takes the time to look.
  • Install a mechanical device that locks the steering wheel, column, or brakes. These devices will deter some criminals.
  • Purchase a vehicle theft tracking/security system, especially if you own one of the frequently stolen model vehicles.
  • Copy your license plate and vehicle information (VIN) numbers on a card and keep them with you. If your vehicle is stolen, the police will need this information to take a report.
  • If your vehicle is stolen, report it to the police immediately.
