Daily Activity Bulletin FAQ

Q: What if there is no case number shown in the Case Number and Classification column?
A: If there is no case number in this column, it means there's no report on file. The Daily Activity Bulletin offers information about a variety of police activity, some of which may not have required a police report.

Q: What is a Field Interview Card?
A: Officers will fill out and file Field Interview Cards to document a conversation had in the field that did not result in a reportable incident, but which was related to crime prevention efforts.

Q: Sometimes the case status is given at the end of the synopsis, and sometimes it isn't. Why is this?
A: While listing the status of criminal cases in a timely manner is a requirement of the Clery Act, the police department is not obligated to list the status of all current cases. For a wide variety of reasons, we may refrain from disclosing the status of these non-criminal cases.

Q: Can I search online for the current status of a case?
A: UCPD does not make the disposition of cases available to the general public through any searchable resource on the web. If you have a question about a particular case, you may call the UCPD business line at 510-642-6760 and make your request to Records who will then let you know if that information can be made public.

Q: What exactly does "case closed" mean?
A: Case closed means the person responsible has been identified. There may or may not have been charges filed. Under investigation means the case is still open and UCPD is pursuing resolution.

Q: There are a lot of acronyms and numbers! What do they all mean?
A: UCPD sometimes uses professional shorthand to notate important facts for our Bulletins. One example is the general identifying information about individuals involved in our documented activity. The format we use for this is "S•R•A•A," which maps to "Sex•Race•Age•Affiliation." Affiliation types we denote are:

  • O: Other

  • E: Employee

  • F: Faculty

  • S: Student

Some unfamiliar acronyms may designate UC Berkeley entities and locations. Try identifying UC Berkeley-specific acronyms with the UC Berkeley Search page. For instance, for fire alarms you may see "PPCS was notified." A search on the berkeley.edu site yields that "PPCS" probably means Physical Plant-Campus Services. Also, sometimes acronyms for campus locations may be used, for instance CKC = "Clark Kerr Campus."

For codes mentioned, you can find common definitions at the publicly available FindLaw/CACodes. UCPD Daily Activity Bulletins may refer to:

Q: What does "Robbery" mean?

A: For the definitions of particular crimes reported here or in our Crime Alerts, refer to this glossary for the UCPD Annual Report.
