UCPD News: UCPD Launches Special Duty Unit
Focusing on Identified Crime Trends in the Area Will Make for More Agile Response
[January 25, Berkeley, CA] The University of California Police Department (UCPD), Berkeley is stepping up its efforts to address safety and security needs just outside of the central campus by creating a new Special Duty Unit (SDU).
Comprised of a Sergeant and five officers, the SDU will normally work from 4:00 PM to 2:00 AM, Wednesdays through Saturdays, and will be dedicated to specific enforcement in the area surrounding the campus, particularly the area south of the core campus.
The SDU, which launched on January 7th, 2013, was designed to focus on identified crime trends, allowing for a more agile response to these prioritized issues without disrupting normal day-to-day police operations or regular service to the broader campus community.
With robberies occurring just off the campus, and concerns about ongoing illegal activity in People's Park, the SDU was created to augment the already successful joint efforts of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) and UCPD in their Telegraph Area Patrol (TAP). The SDU is also working with local task forces, such as the Alameda County Vice Enforcement Team (ACVET) to address core issues such as underage drinking. Underage drinking is often the cause of medical emergencies, fights, and sexual assaults. On a recent south campus operation with the ACVET, the SDU issued 20 citations for furnishing alcohol to a minor, made two felony arrests (for drugs and for a Parolee at Large), and made one misdemeanor arrest for DUI.
"The SDU gives us the resources and flexibility to address activity around the campus that has a negative impact on the quality of life for our community," said UCPD Acting Chief Margo Bennett.
