UCPD News: No Direct Fees for BearWALK

Parents should confirm legitimacy of fundraising calls

How to confirm validity of a caller:

If you receive a call requesting a donation for BearWALK, and you are not certain of the origin, you may take a few steps to validate the caller's identity.

  1. Ask to speak to a supervisor.
  2. Request a number which you can use to call them back. Then hang up and call them.

[September 5, 2012, Berkeley, CA] -- Residential Service Student Programs (RSSP) recently informed UCPD that a parent of a housing student received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Cal, and were told that they had to either make an immediate $25 donation, specifically for BearWALK, or risk a $2500 hike in tuition fees to cover the program.

This claim is misleading at best, and this phone call has been flagged as possibly fraudulent. UCPD would like assure the campus community that BearWALK and its night safety shuttle service are designed to be free of charge to our community.

We are aware that Cal Parents may receive legitimate calls from our Cal Calling Center requesting donations for the Chancellor's Fund (an important fund that does in fact support a number of vital services, among them, BearWALK).

Though UCPD cannot determine if this suspicious circumstance is connected with any attempt of wrong doing, the Crime Prevention Unit wants to make the public aware of these suspicious phone calls. Recipients of such phone calls should confirm the validity and association of the caller before making a donation to Cal.
