OPEN LETTER TO STUDENTS FROM THE CHIEF OF UC POLICE "During our recent efforts to end the occupation of a tree outside Wheeler Hall, I was surprised and deeply moved by the number of students who went out of their way to express support for the University and its police force. Later that day, I received an email from an undergraduate urging me to give you, Berkeley's students, a better sense of the principles behind our approach to the tree-sitters on campus and in the oak grove next to Memorial Stadium. It was a suggestion that made a lot of sense." Read More

2007 SYSTEMWIDE ANNUAL REPORT & CRIME STATISTICS The University of California Police Department (UCPD) has published its systemwide annual report online. The report summarizes the activities and statistics for the police departments from all ten UC campuses. In 2007, the Berkeley campus community experienced a 58% increase in violent crime. It is notable that UCPD was able to solve 74% of these crimes. Relative to the ten-campus University of California system, the Berkeley campus had 50% of the UC system's robbery cases and made 17 of the 30 arrests in this category. In 2008, UCPD is committed to continuing its work to impact the local rising trend in violent crime. View the 2007 Systemwide Annual Report.

MEMO TO CAMPUS COMMUNITY While the Berkeley campus and surrounding areas are generally as safe as other urban areas, the surge over the past two weeks in incidents of robbery, some involving weapons, was unusual. Our department and the City of Berkeley police are aware of the problem and are taking extra measures in response. Read More

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A SHOOTING INCIDENT The tragedy at Virginia Tech has caused campuses across the country to reassess their level of preparedness. At the Berkeley campus, our police department has for many years conducted training for our officers on responding to an active shooting incident. We reinforced that training again this year. Equally important, however, is the level of preparedness of each community member. We hope you will click to read the safety information which we present here for your use and distribution.
