Okay, everyone knows that safety is important-right?
What we all may not know is that each of us can play a part in keeping our community safe. Yes! That's right- YOU can do something to help keep our community safe. And surprisingly, it doesn't require that you join the police force, become a security guard or super spy. The only thing required is that you care about the well being of the community and the people who live in it.What is BEAR TERRITORY?
The idea behind BEAR TERRITORY is simple and based upon the principles of Neighborhood Watch:- Police and other service providers cannot unilaterally address issues around crime and safety in our community.
- Involvement by residents is an essential bridge between services and community need.
- Residents who take an active role in "policing" their communities not only feel safer but also actually make the community safer.
More importantly,
BEAR TERRITORY means that residents in this community recognize that safety and security are everyone's responsibility and their participation is essential in creating and maintaining a safe environment. What does this mean for YOU?
Students:While you are in the Berkeley community, as both a student and a resident, you should take pro-active steps to ensure your safety.
- Use campus and community safety services whenever possible.
- Learn about crime prevention strategies and use those strategies to increase personal safety and reduce property security risk.
In addition, students can help improve the safety of the community by reporting suspicious or criminal activity.
Faculty/Staff:
Staff and Faculty should view their workplace as a home away from home and employ the same measures used at home to ensure the security of the workplace.
- Learn about crime prevention strategies and use those strategies to increase personal safety and reduce property security risk in campus buildings.
- Monitor building activity and report suspicious behavior and/or persons in and around your facility.
Community Members:
Community Members, including merchants, vendors and visitors to the area should take pro-active steps to ensure their own safety and the safety of their property while in Berkeley.
- Use campus and community safety services whenever possible.
- Learn about crime prevention strategies and use those strategies to increase personal safety and reduce property security risk.
- Support enforcement and interdiction efforts by reporting suspicious or criminal behavior.
- For merchants or vendors: participate in community programs that work to address crime and safety issues.
This is OUR community-right? So that means that WE can set the standard for the kind of environment we want for study, research, business, and leisure. Help us by participating in the safety solution
