The Department of Public Safety encourages you to download a computer program—powered by the same technology employed by the BBC, the Wall Street Journal and CNN—which will allow you to receive up-to-the-minute alerts and information relative to your safety and access to the campus. The program is small and will “live” in the system tray of your Windows-based computer as a 7-pointed star at right-end of your “Start” toolbar.
If you get your own ST&AR—Safety, Threats & Alerts Report—you have access to alerts regarding major emergencies or recent crimes, provided by both UCPD and the Office of Emergency Preparedness. Create filters and customize your reports to get the alerts you really need. With one click on ST&AR, you have instant access to the most current information available.
Victoria L. Harrison, Chief of Police for UC Berkeley, said of the new program:
"CAL is a large campus in an urban setting. We believe this program of desktop notification will contribute to a safer campus environment and establish a more direct and immediate link with CAL students and the campus community in general. This new system will help keep our community on top of important security issues as they occur, and provide our community with critical information quickly."

Privacy Note
Occasionally, you may be asked to update anonymous information. Updates insure that your ST&AR delivers only the messages you have requested. All filtering profile information is stored on your computer and no personally identifying information is ever sent to the ST&AR server.
